PRIEST

Again and again, in peace, let us pray to the Lord.

(Lord, have mercy.)

Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and protect us, O God, by Your grace.

(Lord, have mercy.)

Commemorating our most holy, pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

(To You, O Lord.)

For Yours is the dominion, and Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

Mode pl. 2. When the angelic powers.

The martyr athletes offered resistance in the ring, * contesting for the faith, and the tyrants tortured them. * The hosts of Incorporeals observed and were holding the victory medals. * The truly wise contestants amazed the tyrants and kings. * They overturned the devil by their confession of Christ. * O Lord, who strengthened them, glory to You. [SD]

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints, the God of Israel. [SAAS]

The holy athletes endured the contest, and they received from You the medals of victory. They destroyed the machinations of the lawless, and they received the crowns of incorruption. Through them, O God, save our souls. [SD]

Verse: To the saints on His earth, in them the Lord magnified all His will. [SAAS]

O Lord, the memory of Your Saints is like the Garden of Eden, for all creation greatly rejoices in it. Grant us peace and great mercy, by their intercessions. [SD]

Glory. For the Dead.

We pray for those who died in true faith and whom You have taken to yourself, that You, as our placable God, place them in the dwellings of the elect and in the land of the living; fill them with Your never-setting light, and grant them Your heavenly joy. [SD]

Both now. Theotokion.

O Lord, who called the blessed Maid Your Mother, You came to the Passion of Your own will and intent. Adam You wished to seek; You therefore shone upon the Cross, saying to the Angels, "Rejoice with me together, for I have found the coin that was lost." O Lord, You have disposed all things wisely. Glory to You. [SD]

Evlogetaria for the Dead.

Mode pl. 1.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

The choir of Saints has found the fountain of life and the door of Paradise. May I also find the way through repentance. I am the sheep that is lost: O Savior, call me back and save me. [HC]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Of old You created me from nothing and honored me with Your divine image. But when I disobeyed Your commandment, O Lord, You cast me down to the earth from where I was taken. Lead me back again to Your likeness, and renew my original beauty. [HC]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

I am an image of Your ineffable glory, though I bear the scars of my transgressions. On Your creation, Master, take pity and cleanse me by Your compassion. Grant me the homeland for which I long and once again make me a citizen of Paradise. [HC]

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes.

Give rest, O God, to Your servant, and place him (her) in Paradise where the choirs of the Saints and the righteous will shine as the stars of heaven. To Your departed servant give rest, O Lord, and forgive all his (her) offenses. [HC]

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The threefold radiance of the one God let us praise, and let us shout in song: Holy are You, eternal Father, coeternal Son, and divine Spirit! Illumine us who worship You in faith and deliver us from the eternal fire. [HC]

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Rejoice, gracious Lady, who for the salvation of all gave birth to God in the flesh, and through whom the human race has found salvation. Through you, pure and blessed Theotokos, may we find Paradise. [HC]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Glory to You, O God. (3)

DEACON

Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy, we pray You, hear us and have mercy.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for the blessed memory and eternal repose of all pious Orthodox Christians who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection unto life everlasting, emperors, patriarchs, bishops, priests, deacons, hieromonks, deacon-monks, monks, nuns, fathers, forebears, grandparents, great-grandparents, parents, spouses, children, siblings, and all our relatives, from the beginning until the end of time; and for the forgiveness of all their sins, both voluntary and involuntary.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

May the Lord God place their souls where the righteous repose. Let us ask for the mercies of God, the kingdom of Heaven, and the forgiveness of their sins from Christ our immortal king and God.

(Grant this, O Lord.)

DEACON

Let us pray to the Lord.

(Lord, have mercy.)

PRIEST

O God of spirits and of all flesh, You have trampled down death and have abolished the power of the devil, giving life to Your world. Give rest to the souls of Your departed servants, emperors, patriarchs, bishops, priests, deacons, hieromonks, deacon-monks, monks, and nuns, all pious Orthodox Christians who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection unto life everlasting, from all the ends of the world, fathers, forebears, grandparents, great-grandparents, parents, spouses, children, siblings, and all our relatives. Give them rest in a place of light, in a place of repose, in a place of refreshment, where there is no pain, sorrow, and suffering. As a good and loving God, forgive every sin they have committed in thought, word or deed, for there is no one who lives and is sinless. You alone are without sin. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your word is truth.

DEACON

Let us pray to the Lord.

(Lord, have mercy.)

PRIEST

For You are the resurrection, the life and the repose of all the departed faithful Orthodox Christians, Christ our God, and to You we give glory, with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good and life giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

(Amen.)

Mode pl. 1.

Grant rest with the Righteous to Your servants, O our Savior, and grant them to dwell in Your courts, as it is written. Since You are good, overlook their offences, both voluntary and involuntary, and all that they committed in knowledge or in ignorance, O Lover of man. [SD]

Glory.

And all that they committed in knowledge or in ignorance, O Lover of man. [SD]

O Christ our God, who from a Virgin rose upon the world, and through her made us sons of light, have mercy on us. [SD]

READER

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Mode pl. 4.

Immortal Savior, let those who have departed from us and from things temporary dwell in the dwellings of the elect, and grant them to repose with the righteous. Even if as human beings they sinned on earth, will You the sinless Lord forgive their voluntary and involuntary transgressions, at the intercessions of Your Mother, the Theotokos, so that in unison we may sing on their behalf: Alleluia. [SD]

Oikos.

You alone are immortal, You who created and fashioned man. For we mortals were fashioned from the earth, and to the same earth we will go again, as You who fashioned me commanded and said to me: "You are earth, and to the earth you shall return"; where all we mortals shall go, as we make our funeral lament: Alleluia. [SD]

Synaxarion.

From the Menaion.

On June 6 we commemorate our devout Father Hilarion the New, Abbot of the Dalmation Monastery.

On this day we also commemorate our devout Father Attalus the Wonderworker.

On this day we also commemorate the Holy five Virgins and their comrades.

From the Pentecostarion.

Our most godly Fathers ordered that on this day we remember all those who have ever reposed with correct faith and with the hope of the resurrection of life eternal.

O Master Christ, assign the souls of those who have already reposed to the dwellings of the Righteous, and have mercy on us, as the only Immortal One. Amen.

The Canon

The Patriarchal Typikon indicates, as usual, that the entire canon be sung. Typically in parishes only the Katavasias are used. This day does not present festal Katavasias, but rather the Heirmoi of the canon are used, which thematically have nothing to do with the Saturday of the Souls. I have therefore included Ode ix in its entirety, edited for the enrichment and edification of both chanters and listeners. Since Saturday of the Souls is not a great feast, Ode ix is, as usual, preceded by the Magnificat.

Ode v.

With Your divine light, O good One, shine * on the souls of those who longingly rise to You early, I supplicate, * so that they may know You the very God, Word of God, * who call them to return from the gloom offences bring. [SD]

Ode vi.

Perceiving the open sea of temporal life to rise, * and billow with the surging waves * of temptations, and fleeing for refuge in Your calm port, I cry to You: * Raise my life from corruption, O most merciful Lord. [SD]

Once the Angel caused the fiery furnace to emit * dew to refresh the three holy youths. * The Chaldeans were by command of God completely burnt. * And therefore the tyrant was convinced * to cry aloud, "O God of our fathers, blessed are You." [SD]

Ode viii.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Heaven, be astonished and amazed, and let the foundations of the earth be shaken! Behold, He who ever dwells in the heights is numbered among the dead; a small tomb receives Him as a stranger. Bless the Lord, O you Servants; sing a hymn, Priests; and People, exalt Him beyond measure unto all the ages. [SD]

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

O merciful Lord, now the choirs of Angels implore You, and the Cherubim and divine Seraphim entreat You, and the Powers, the Thrones, Principalities, and Hosts, Archangels and Dominions all pray to You, O mighty God, that You be merciful to all the souls that You have translated. [SD]

Most holy Virgin and Lady of the world, you are the shelter of all, both the living and the dead; and you are the calmness, the glory, the delight and the relief of those who have obtained you as their defender, helper, and deliverer, O good one. Therefore, save them all, by your prayers. [SD]

Ode ix. Katavasia. Mode pl. 2.

Every tongue is dumbfounded to extol as is worthy; * a super-mundane mind is dizzied praising you with hymns, O Theotokos. * Nonetheless accept our faith, since you are full of goodness, * for you have seen our longing indeed inspired by God. * Lady, as the protectress of Christians, you do we magnify. Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord's name, for His name alone is exalted.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Mode pl. 2. That woman, who was spurned.

Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. [SAAS]

The finality of a person's death is awful; * and the Master's judgment to come is also dreadful. * For in Hell is prepared the unquenchable fire, * there is the sleepless worm that tortures, * and the gnashing of teeth, and don't forget the outer darkness, the everlasting sentence. * Therefore let us cry out to the Savior: * "To those You chose from what is temporal grant repose, * because of Your great mercy." [SD]

Praise Him with the sound of trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre. [SAAS]

All who are engrossed in mundane existence, * come and be amazed as we look within the caskets. * Behold, the illusion of the world and its deception. * Where is the beauty of the body, * and the glory of wealth, where is the pride in one's position? Truly all this is useless. * Therefore let us cry out to the Savior: * "To those You chose from what is temporal grant repose, * because of Your great mercy." [SD]

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute. [SAAS]

Once upon a throne, he is in the grave now. * Once in royal purple, he is decaying. * No longer upon a throne, but in a tomb now he is lying. * See how imperial authority has left him. * See how every person's life passes like a dream and is finished. * Therefore let us cry out to the Savior: * "To those You chose from what is temporal grant repose, * because of Your great mercy." [SD]

Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. [SAAS]

Savior, we entreat You for every person * who has died in whichever way and passed on * from this life in hopes of everlasting life, O Master, * people of every race and station, * of every age and stature, both men and women, youths and children, * and even newborn infants. * In Your love for humanity, place them in the bosom of Abraham, in a place of rest, * because of Your great mercy. A flower withers and a dream passes: likewise every human being disintegrates. Then, at the sound of the trumpet, there will be like an earthquake, and all the dead will rise to meet You, O Christ God. You are our God, who in wisdom creates and fills all things. O Christ, You sent Prophets to prophesy Your coming, and Apostles to proclaim Your mighty works. The former prophesied Your coming, and the latter illumined the nations through baptism. Martyrs suffered and attained what they longed for; and all these, together with Your Mother, intercede with You. O God, grant rest to the souls that You have taken to yourself, and also count us worthy of Your kingdom. You are the one who endured the Cross for me who am condemned, O my Redeemer and God. [SD]

We have you as a fortress and a port and an acceptable intercessor with God, whom you bore, O unwedded Theotokos, the salvation of the faithful. [SD]

DEACON

Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy, we pray You, hear us and have mercy.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Let us pray for pious and Orthodox Christians.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for (episcopal rank) (name).

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for our brethren: the priests, the hieromonks, the hierodeacons, the monastics, and all our brotherhood in Christ.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, protection, forgiveness, and remission of the sins of the servants of God, all pious Orthodox Christians residing and visiting in this city: the parishioners, the members of the parish council, the stewards, and benefactors of this holy church.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for the blessed and ever-memorable founders of this holy church, and for all our fathers and brethren who have fallen asleep before us, who here have been piously laid to their rest, as well as the Orthodox everywhere.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for those who bear fruit and do good works in this holy and all-venerable church, for those who labor and those who sing, and for the people here present who await Your great and rich mercy.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (3) Father, bless!

Conclusion, i.e. "Through the prayers..."
