The angel incarnate and the Prophets' pedestal, * the second Forerunner of the coming of Christ, Elias the glorious, * sent down to Elisha the divine grace from heaven. * He drives away diseases and he cleanses lepers. * Therefore he pours out healings to those who honor him. [SD]

O Theotokos, through you became manifest to us on earth the mystery, which was hid from eternity, and which the Angels themselves knew not: that God, uniting natures without confusion, becomes a man and accepts crucifixion for our salvation voluntarily. By virtue of this, resurrecting man whom He had first created, He saved our souls from death. [SD]

23:29-39

The Lord said to the Jews who had come to him, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' " [RSV]

Ψαλμὸς Nʹ (50).

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar.

O Elias, as your name includes the name of God, you received the fire of the zeal for God in your heart, and you passed the time of your life in fire. At birth, Angels swaddled you in fire and fed you the fiery flame. Later in life, three times you called down fire from heaven. And in the end, a fiery chariot picked you up and took you up as if into heaven. How amazing! A man's clay frame was forged by the power of the Spirit, and it became all fiery! And now, united to the immaterial fire of the Godhead, he intercedes on behalf of our souls. [SD]

Seeing humanity's great iniquity and God's measureless love for humanity, Elias the Prophet was angry and troubled and spoke uncompassionate words to the compassionate God. "Vent Your wrath," cried he, "on them who renounced You, O Judge most just." But in no way did he move the heart of the Good to punish the ones who renounced Him. For He ever awaits the repentance of all, as the Lord who alone loves humanity. [SD]

Clothed with the power that wondrously * was formed for you from God above, O most inspired, * with one meal only to sustain your life, * you ended your pilgrimage of forty days. * And at Horeb the mountain * you danced and you sang unto the gentle breeze: * "Almighty God of our Fathers, ever blessed are You!"

Amazed was the universe by your divine magnificence. * You who were perpetually virgin * carried the heavenly God of all in your womb * and gave birth to the eternal Son, * who awards salvation to all who sing hymns of praise to you. [SD]

Ὠδὴ Ϛʹ.

Ode vi.

O godly-minded believers, come * and celebrate this sacred and venerable feast and thus extol * the Theotokos, and clap our hands, * and glorify our God who was truly born of her. [SD]

Ὠδὴ ζʹ.

Ode vii.

Godly-minded three * did not adore created things in the Creator's stead; * rather, disdaining the threat * of fire, they trampled it, and joyfully they sang: * "O supremely praised * and most exalted Lord and God * of the fathers, You are blessed." [SD]

Ὠδὴ ηʹ.

Ode viii.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Guiltless were those Servants in the furnace. * The Son of the Theotokos went and rescued them. * He who was prefigured then, * having been incarnate now, * is gathering the whole wide world into His Church to sing: * "O all you works of the Lord, to all ages * sing praises to the Lord and exalt Him beyond measure." [SD]

Prophet of God, intercede for us.

After St. Elias the Tishbite * led his life on earth unswayed by men, * and when he struck the Jordan's waters with his cloak * and they parted for him to cross, then he boarded a chariot, * and by the Spirit made his way * heavenward on a strange trajectory. [SD]

Aflame was the Tishbite Elias * with religious zeal and love for God, * when in the fiery chariot he flew away. * On Elisha, whom he could not elude, he let his mantle fall; * and thus the Prophet left him with * double the portion of his gift of grace. [SD]

On Mt. Tabor, Prophet Elias * was with Moses and beheld the Lord * when He became incarnate, the Ruler over all, * that which eyes had not ever seen * and ears had never heard before * and human hearts had not perceived. * Truly the Tishbite was a seer of God. [SD]

O Prophet, you were seen worthy to see God * in a light breeze — as far as a mortal can — * having before * made your body light by ascetic life; * and therefore, I implore you that, * lightening the heaviness of my mind * by your own intercessions, * you now would shine divine beams * of true repentance and illumine me. Of old, you once divided the Jordan’s streams * into two with your mantle by striking it, and crossed on foot, * so now also dry up, all-blessed one, * the streams of all my dreadful sins, * sending to my soul now and every day * repentant tears like storm-rain, * O God-proclaiming Prophet, * and granting me a torrent of delight. From all the many stumbling blocks in this life, * tribulations, temptations, and lawless foes, fleshly disease, * and ev’ry perversion of mind and soul, * and from eternal punishment * in Gehenna, rescue me by your prayers; * O glorious great Prophet, * and good loving protector, * for in affliction I cry out to you. Again we pray for the blessed and ever-memorable founders of this holy church, and for all our fathers and brethren who have fallen asleep before us, who here have been piously laid to their rest, as well as the Orthodox everywhere.

(Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

Again we pray for those who bear fruit and do good works in this holy and all-venerable church, for those who labor and those who sing, and for the people here present who await Your great and rich mercy.

Holy Lord, dwelling on high and beholding things below and, with your eye that observes all, keeping watch over the whole creation, to you we have bowed the neck of our soul and body, and we beseech you, O Holy of Holies: Stretch forth your invisible hand from your holy dwelling and bless us all. And, as you are good and love humankind, pardon us if we have sinned in anything, voluntarily or involuntarily, granting us your blessings both of this world and of the world above.
