Kathisma I.

From Octoechos - - -

For compunction.

Mode pl. 4.

With your compassionate eye, O Lord, see my humiliation, for little by little my life is being squandered, and there is no salvation for me from works; therefore I ask this: with your compassionate eye, Lord, see my humiliation and save me. [EL]

Verse: O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, nor chasten me in Your anger.

Mode pl. 4. N/M (By conceiving.)

Reflecting on that dread day, my soul, watch, lighting your lamp and shining with the oil of mercy; for you do not know when the voice will come to you which says: Behold the Bridegroom. See then, my soul, that you do not doze and remain outside knocking like the five virgins; but persevere unsleeping, that you may meet Christ God with rich oil and the he may give you the divine bridal chamber of his glory. [EL]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the wisdom.

Duty-bound I present you this hymn of praise, * like the widow's two cents, out of gratitude, * O Lady, because of all your benevolent favors. * For you are my shelter and likewise my help in need; * from troubles and temptations you ever deliver me. * Therefore being rescued from the things that afflict me, * as though from a furnace fire, from my heart I cry out to you, * Theotokos help me, I pray, * interceding with your Son and God * that He grant forgiveness of offences * to those who faithfully worship your Son, O immaculate one. [SD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 8. There is no litany, but immediately the following:

Kathisma II.

For compunction.

Mode pl. 4.

As though the Judge were present, be anxious, my soul, and think on the moment of the dread day; for the judgement is merciless for those who have not acted with mercy; therefore before the end cry out: Spare me, O Saviour, for you alone love humankind. [EL]

Verse: Look upon me and have mercy on me.

As the harlot I fall down before you that I may receive forgiveness, and instead of precious ointment I offer you the tears from my heart, Christ God, that you may take pity on me as on her, O Saviour, and grant me pardon of my sins; for like her I cry to you: Deliver me from the mire of my deeds. [EL]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode pl. 4. When You, the Life of all.

I fell into the ocean of terrible depression * because of all my deeds that were wicked and unlawful. * Now I am at a loss, and desperation possesses me. * O Lady Theotokos, in your compassion save me and deliver me. * For we know you to be the one who helps * and cleanses sinners for salvation. [SD]

Kathisma III. For the Apostle.

From Menaion - - -

Mode pl. 1. N/M (Let us worship the Word.)

Let us all praise the Apostle and Disciple of Christ with hymns on his commemoration; for in a manner fitting God he has confirmed our minds in the Lord, having handled the marks of the nails as he sought firm belief, and he intercedes unrelentingly that he have mercy on our souls. [EL]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode pl. 1. N/M (Let us worship the Word.)

Implore the God and Lord who was incarnate of you, Holy Lady, for the sake of us who were corrupted by sins, to take pity on us and to turn away his anger and rage from those who cry out with faith and unceasingly praise the mighty deeds of his grace. [EL]

READER

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. His friend said to him, crying out: Unless I see the wounds of His hands, I will not believe! Then the Master of all, in His desire to save all, came as a servant and said to Thomas: Touch My hands and My side and do not be unbelieving, for I am your Lord and God. In repentance he cried out: ⁄⁄ You are my Lord and my God! [OCA]

Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars and light.

Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Lord's name.

For He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.

He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps.

Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word.

Mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars.

Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds.

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord's name, for His name alone is exalted.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.

For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.

Idiomelon. Mode 2.

Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. [SAAS]

You followed Christ, O Apostle Thomas, and you disregarded the world; you hid His teachings in your inner room, and you became an Apostle. Then you went among the Gentiles, whose souls were darkened by error and the sinful passions, and with the Savior's commandments you enlightened them, to believe in the consubstantial Trinity. [SD]

Praise Him with the sound of trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre. [SAAS]

You followed Christ, O Apostle Thomas, and you disregarded the world; you hid His teachings in your inner room, and you became an Apostle. Idiomelon. Mode 4.

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute. [SAAS]

Fully illumined by the divine fire of the knowledge of God, you imitated the Master in all things, as a lawful disciple, O Apostle Thomas. Using the fishing rod of the Cross, you pulled the souls of the pious out of the deep sea of ignorance. And with the fishing net of the Holy Spirit, you caught the minds of those in India that were in darkness. We pray you ever implore Christ God, also to deliver us from the bedarkened face of the enemy, and to save our souls. [SD]

Idiomelon. Mode 4.

Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. [SAAS]

You abandoned fishing in the sea, and instead by faith you took up the fishing rod of the Cross, and you used it to catch everyone, O Apostle Thomas. Therefore you were counted worthy to touch the immaculate side of the Logos with your hand, and to examine with your finger the wounds of the nails that had pierced Him. We pray you ever earnestly intercede with Christ God to save our souls. [SD]

Mode pl. 2.

You gazed on the divine mysteries of Christ, Apostle Thomas, and mystically you have been declared to be a spiritual mixing bowl, in which the souls of believers rejoice; for with the divine net of the Spirit you drew peoples from the deep of ignorance; therefore you came from Sion as a river of grace, welling up with your inspired doctrines into the whole creation. And so, imitating the passion of Christ, you were pierced in the side and entered the darkness of incorruption; implore him to have mercy on our souls. [EL]

From Octoechos - - -

Both now. Theotokion.

Theotokos, you are the true vine that produced the fruit of life. Lady, we fervently entreat you to intercede along with the Apostle and all the saints, that our souls be treated mercifully. [SD]

Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we shall see light.

Continue Your mercy to those who know You.
